Compilers of family histories get a 100

Compilers are usually in the 700
Authors and those responsible for the creation of the intellectual or artistic content are in the 100.
Sometimes a compiler is responsible for the creation of the intellectual or artistic content.
eg.
Compilers of family histories. It is their research and so they should get a 100.

There has been some confusion about whether compilers and collators should get main entry in a bibliographic record.

However, AACR2 is fairly clear on this matter, stating in Rule 21.30D1:
"Make an added entry under the heading for a prominently named editor or compiler. For serials and integrating resources, make an added entry under the heading for an editor if considered to be important"

There is no further interpretation of this rule in either LCRI or the CSBs.

Main entry is given to the "personal author", that is, the "person chiefly responsible for the creation of the intellectual or artistic content of a work" (Rule 21.1A1)

The AACR2 Glossary defines a compiler as:

"One who produces a collection by selecting and putting together matter from the works of various persons or bodies. 2. One who selects and puts together in one publication matter from the works of one person or body"

There is no entry for collators, but the Oxford dictionary online describes them as:

"One who collates the sheets or contents of a book, for binding, or for bibliographical purposes."

In both these cases, therefore, they are not responsible for the creation of the intellectual or artistic content of a work, only in bringing together and organising such content. This is why they get added entry only.

However, occasionally the role of compilers or collators goes beyond these definitions, and does actually involve some responsibility for the creation of the intellectual or artistic content, as well as its bringing together. In such cases, judgement should be used and you may wish to give them main entry.
