Literature of two or more languages

If 2 languages, use number coming first in 820-890 , unless there are different instructions.

eg, use 880 (not 870 ) for Greek and Latin.

If more than two languages are involved from a language family, use the most specific number that will contain all the languages. eg 830 for English, German, and Dutch, since they are all Germanic languages.

Do not use 820-890 for broad groupings such as Indo-European or for unralated literature. For example, use 808 for collections covering English, French, and Russian (all Indo-European languages), 809 for criticism, 800 for a combination of collections and criticism.

If any one language is predominant, class with that language.

008/23 coding

008/23 code “r” (Regular print reproduction) should not be used for new works, new editions of an existing work, paperback editions or other “normal” reissues of a work. The code is meant to indicate when an item has been re-produced from an existing manifestation, e.g. a photocopy or a facsimile. The code is meant to alert the computer that the re-produced item is not the same as the original it was taken from, and so break any potential match when the record for the re-production seeks to enter the database.

To quote from the MARC21 manual:

4.1.2. Initials, Abbreviations, and Acronyms in Cuttering

Cuttering follows the ALA Filing Rules (1980 ed.), which is basically word-by-word filing. Initials, abbreviations, and acronyms are filed as words with U.S. and Gt. Brit. as two exceptions.

facsim. (from AACRII glossary) - A reproduction simulating the physical appearance of the original in addition to reproducing its contents exactly.

Simulating. (from Macquarie dictioanry) To have the appearance of.

The question arises if a facsim. has to be the same size. The answer is no, but it must have the same appearance.

Some interesting notes here on Cutters eg.

The Cutter number "D557" comes between D55 and D56. ie D55 = D550 but the 0 is dropped.

The "3 figure tables" do not use D55, but goes from D549 to D551.

Compilers of family histories get a 100

Compilers are usually in the 700
Authors and those responsible for the creation of the intellectual or artistic content are in the 100.
Sometimes a compiler is responsible for the creation of the intellectual or artistic content.
eg.
Compilers of family histories. It is their research and so they should get a 100.

These days books often list web references.
Therefore the following is used:-
