Only add a 246 if there is a difference in the first 5 words of the title

AACR2 Rule 21.30J2 says that an added entry for variant titles is given if there is a significant difference in the Title proper. The LCRI for this rule defines "significantly different" as "in the first five words of the title proper". [bold mine] This means that we generally do not make an added entry for variations which occur in the subtitle.

However, there may be a few occasions when a difference in the subtitle may be significant enough to justify an added entry which includes both the title proper AND the subtitle (for example, if the title proper is less than 5 words and the first word of the subtitle is a number or acronym). This is an exception to AACR and LCRI, so cataloguers should exercise judgement about using this.

MARC Coding
If a decision has been made to include the subtitle, it should be placed in the $b subfield of the 246. In the past, we have not used the $bsubfield because of system constrainsts. However, those systems constrainsts are no longer there, so correct MARC coding should be followed.
